The music scene is buzzing with the arrival of Curl, the latest single from rising pop sensation Ryn Kid. Collaborating with the seasoned producer Andrew Furze, Curl is a track that captures the essence of youthful obsession, self-discovery, and the exhilarating energy of a night out. Splash Magazine had the opportunity to sit down with both Ryn Kid and Andrew Furze to discuss the inspiration behind this captivating single, their creative process, and what fans can expect next.

The Inspiration Behind “Curl”

Splash MagazineRyn, please tell us about the inspiration behind your new single “Curl”.

Ryn Kid: I came into that session with Andrew and Dani with a lot on my mind. Only a few weeks before, I realized that I had feelings for a girl. This was completely new for me, and I never thought I would feel the way I did about her. Eaten up with obsessive thoughts, I spilled my guts to them, and immediately we all knew we had to write about her. Curl paints the typical story of a straight-girl-turned-bi and being confused about what she’s feeling. Am I impressed or obsessed? Do I wanna be her or be with her?! I really wanted to make this track feel like the moment I was dancing with this girl in a club to “Toxic” by Britney Spears—lights flashing, beat kicking, total tunnel vision on her.

The Production Process

Splash MagazineAndrew, what was your approach to producing “Curl”?

Andrew Furze: We’ve spent a lot of time refining Ryn Kid’s sound—she has so much energy and is such a fun artist. For this single, we wanted to capture the spirit of a 1980s party. There’s a bunch of cool retro synths, like Prophets and Jupiters, in the track. I also added some fairly dirty guitars to give it a slightly harder edge. The goal was to blend that nostalgic vibe with a modern twist, making it a track that’s both fresh and familiar.

Collaborating on “Curl”

Splash MagazineHow did you and Ryn collaborate on this track?

Ryn Kid: Andrew, Dani Poppitt, and I wrote this song together and brought it to life from scratch in his studio in Eagle Rock! I remember Andrew started playing this sick, driving bass riff, and immediately I sang, “Drive fast when the lights flash on ya girl,” which then became the hook of the song. We all bounced off each other while crafting the lyrics to have a unique identity and really paint the imagery and personality of this girl and how she made me feel.

Andrew Furze: We’ve co-written a lot together in my studio now. Ryn is an incredible pop writer in her own right. Sometimes I’ll bring in other writers for her to bounce off as well. In this case, we brought in my very good friend Dani Poppitt, who is a pop genius. Ryn Kid often has a good idea of what she wants to write about, and in this case, she told us her story about this girl. It felt right away like it should be an electro/dance pop jam. We almost always finish our songs in the session, and this one was no different.

The Message Behind the Music

Splash MagazineWhat message or feeling do you hope listeners take away from “Curl”?

Ryn Kid: I hope they can’t sit still! The main thing I wanted to achieve with this song is a good time. Encapsulating that moment at the club dancing to 2000s iconic pop music, I hope the listener feels transported into the party vibe listening to Curl. I also hope it might resonate with anyone who’s struggling to accept their sexuality or perhaps is afraid of their feelings toward another soul. I want them to know it’s all good, it’s all love—just dance and shoot your shot! Play this song for that special someone so they know you’re into them, lol!
