I love to eat and trying out new recipes. Which is why I was excited when I got my hands on the cookbook, EAT LIKE YOU GIVE A FORK: The Real Dish on Eating to Thrive by Mareya Ibrahim.

In the introduction, Ibrahim notes that “Food is magical…. It’s the only art form that lets us…engage all five senses in the celebration of sustenance.” I loved reading this tidbit. So often I hear more about foods that are bad for us, and end up feeling guilty when indulging and enjoying a meal that isn’t a salad.

Mareya invites readers to escape the dreaded diet mentality with a more positive approach to healthy eating by providing eight essential nutritional strategies which are Reset Your Taste Buds, Stock Your Real Kitchen, Get Up on Greens, Take a Vegan Fast Break, Go Gluten-Free Super Grains, Fill in with Good Fat, Become Real Dense, and Live the 90/10 Rule. These strategies are accompanied by  eighty “forking delicious” recipes Mareya encourages readers to remake their kitchens, taste buds, bodies, and energy levels with honest and easy-to-understand recipes, including:

  • You Glow Smoothie ( I drank this smoothie about every other day. It’s so tasty and is one of my favorite inclusions in the book.)
  • No-Bake Oatmeal Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies (I love cookies and this a healthy take on it.)
  • Spaghetti Squash Pad Thai ( An interesting take with a veggie I always have on hand during the fall season.)

Along with the above recipes, I also made my own artichoke hummus. Honestly, I never realized how simple the ingredients for hummus are, and how easy it was to make on your own. Having made purchases after reading through the staples for the kitchen and the “All-You-Can-Eat Buffet” of veggies, I had plenty to snack on with this detectable dip.

EAT LIKE YOU GIVE A FORK has recipes that will appeal to different taste buds along with broadening your palette, dessert included! I thought the recipes were delicious and I appreciate Ibrahim’s tips and explanations about food. While we may know that it is important to eat healthy, she breaks it down further explaining how and why items are an essential part of our well being. I recommend this for anyone wanting to try new recipes, eat well, or learn more about improving your food choices.
